National Preparedness Month

Family creating a disaster plan

Every September, the United States observes National Preparedness Month, a campaign designed to encourage individuals, families, and communities to take proactive steps in preparing for emergencies.  Natural disasters, as well as man-made emergencies, can strike without warning. The aftermath of these events can be devastating, leading to loss of life, property damage, and long-term disruptions. Disasters are costly but preparing for them doesn’t have to be.

Steps to Get Started

  • Know the risks: Take the time to make a plan with your family, build an emergency supply kit, and know the risks in your area. The QC Ready app is the official public safety app of the Rock Island County and Scott County Emergency Management Agencies (EMA). Sign up at no cost to receive emergency alerts.

  • Build a kit: Remember, you can build your emergency supply kit over time and start with items you may already have in your home, like copies of important documents, non-perishable food, flashlights, and extra batteries.

  • Make a plan: Know how you’ll contact your loved ones and reconnect if separated. Be sure to practice your plan with your family/household.
