Flu is a contagious respiratory infection that can cause mild to severe illness and affects the nose, throat, and lungs. Symptoms can include fever, cough, sore throat, runny nose, muscle aches, headaches, and fatigue. Anyone can get the flu, but some people are at higher risk of developing serious complications if they get sick, including people 65 years and older, people of any age with certain chronic medical conditions, pregnant people, and children younger than 5 years.
Everyone 6 months and older should get an annual flu vaccine, ideally by the end of October.
