Take Pride in LGBTQIA+ Health

Routine health screenings and exams, mental health support, and care for health needs are all key to feeling healthy. Still, people who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning, intersex, or asexual (LGBTQIA+) may put off or even skip getting the care they need and deserve.

Some of the health care barriers LGBTQIA+ folx see include:

  • Discrimination, poor treatment, being refused care
  • Lack of trained and welcoming providers
  • Lower rates of health insurance coverage
  • Health insurance coverage that does not cover needed care
    (Movement Advancement Project, 2024)

To combat these barriers and support sexual wellbeing, the Scott County Health Department (SCHD) has welcoming and affirming sexual health screening and treatment services. SCHD offers HIV testing to Iowans and can help to link to follow-up care if needed. Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) clinics are also held on Tuesdays from 12:30 pm to 3:30 pm, and Fridays from 8:15 am to 11:15 am. Call 563-326-8618 with questions.
