While gun/firearm violence as a public health issue is currently a debated topic, gun violence as a mortality statistic is a fact with which public health is faced. According to the CDC, firearms resulted in more than 36,000 deaths in the United States in 2015, 288 of which occurred in Iowa. The Scott County Health Department, along with health departments across the state and country, remain committed to reducing intentional and unintentional injuries in our community and to supporting efforts to make our communities safe. The American Journal of Public Health, a publication of the American Public Health Association, has gathered a number of studies on gun violence, including studies on concealed firearm permits, safe gun storage, hospitalizations from firearm injuries, and mental illness and mass shootings. This research provides important information to all sides of the conversation regarding firearms in our communities.
