Registration for this program is FULL!

Come learn about the many wild edibles in your own neck of the woods. We will focus on foraging basics, foraging safety, identifying plants, and preparing wild edibles. We will take a hike outdoors to identify and forage some of the winter wild edibles available during this time. After the hike, put your cast iron cooking skills to the test and make pancakes served with hickory syrup and tea out of our foraged ingredients over a campfire!

Wapsi Center Homeschool Day!

Once a month the Wapsi River EE Center will be hosting a day just for homeschoolers!

Joins us for themed programming led by our Naturalists! The goal of this series is to immerse children in the natural world and help them experience seasonal phenomena in a hands-on way.

This month's activities are most appropriate for ages 3 and up. There is a program fee of $3/person payable at registration. Come prepared for the weather. Please bring a lunch.

February: Snowshoeing and Ice fishing.

Natural Health & Home Products

Body: 

Come join Wapsi River Center staff and learn to create your own health and home products made with natural ingredients. Making your own natural products is more sustainable, customizable, and it's FUN! At this program we will make soap, lip balm, and hand sanitizer. We will also discuss recycling, upcycling, and reducing your footprint on the planet! Participants must be 5 years and older. The program costs $8/person for supplies

November: Land Stewardship

Natural Wreath Workshop

Body: 

Learn how to make a natural wreath with Naturalist Mike. Grapevine will be used to create a wreath base which is then decorated with pine boughs, pinecones, seeds, and nuts. Participants my bring items to decorate and personalize their own creations. This class costs $10/wreath.

Fall Ecology Day

Body: 

Come explore the Wapsi River Center this Fall. A woodland nature hike, prairie seed collection and a fall prairie burn will help you get into the season. See Smokey The Bear and celebrate his 80th birthday! Free family fun for everyone. Please plan to wear long pants and closed-toe shoes.

Great Atlatl Pumpkin Hunt

Body: 

Join naturalist Mike for a chance to hunt pumpkins with an atlatl, a primitive hunting weapon originally used to hunt mastodon and bison. Fun for the whole family and outdoor enthusiasts alike!!! This program is weather permitting.

Halloween Hike

Body: 

Join naturalist Michael J. Granger for an educational adventure to learn about mysterious and misunderstood animals.  At 5:00 P.M. there will be a campfire available for your grilling needs. Please bring your own food items and we will provide the fire and roasting sticks!  The hike will begin at 6:30 P.M. with a spooky scavenger hunt afterwards.  Please bring a flashlight!  Family fun for everyone.
