Job Summary

Under general supervision, the Wapsi Center Caretaker performs a variety of grounds maintenance, janitorial duties, equipment care and maintenance, and minor electrical and plumbing repairs at the Wapsi River Environmental Education Center. This is a non-benefit eligible, part-time (approximately 30 hours/week), year-round position..

Job Responsibilities

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Completes routine repair and maintenance work on park buildings and facilities to include minor carpentry repairs, finishing work on remodel or building projects, and fabrication and repair of park signage; coordination with full-time staff on major repairs.
  • Performs daily janitorial tasks; mops, sweeps, vacuums, cleans, and disinfects all buildings, restrooms, showers.
  • Performs a variety of grounds maintenance work to include mowing, cutting brush, hauling gravel and garbage, grading, removing snow from roads and walkways, and making minor repairs to roads or trails.
  • Performs routine forestry tasks such as pruning, thinning, and planting of trees, shrubs, and grass.
  • Installs sinks and toilets; cleans drains; solders leaks; replaces pipes; performs other minor routine plumbing repairs.
  • Operates a variety of equipment to complete work to include trucks, tractors, commercial mowing equipment, and utility vehicles to maintain grounds, perform garbage pick-up, plow snow and haul materials.
  • Makes recommendations for and orders repair parts or supplies for building/grounds maintenance, with appropriate authority from supervisor.
  • Coordinates and works with full-time maintenance staff when assistance is needed or when directed.
  • Demonstrates the ability to exemplify, by his/her actions, the County PRIDE philosophy.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Standards for Initial Consideration

Education, Training, and Experience Guidelines:
Two (2) years of experience operating commercial equipment for facility and grounds maintenance or construction related work; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Knowledge of:

  • Applicable local, State, and Federal laws, codes, regulations, and ordinances.
  • Work safety policies, procedures, and practices.
  • General electrical, plumbing, and carpentry principles and practices.
  • Tools, materials, methods, and equipment used in facilities and grounds maintenance.


Skill in:

  • Working independently.
  • Operating a variety of tools and equipment safely.
  • Identifying and troubleshooting problems and developing practical solutions.
  • Repairing and maintaining a variety of motors and equipment.
  • Interacting tactfully and professionally with County staff, outside agencies, and the public.
  • Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships.
  • Communicating effectively verbally and in writing.

Supplemental Information

License and Certification Requirements
Must possess a valid driver's license.

Physical Demands and Working Environment:
Work is performed throughout the Wapsi River Environmental Education Center and grounds and requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions, electrical voltage, potentially dangerous tools, equipment, and machinery, and hazardous chemicals.
