Job Summary

Under general supervision, the Senior Victim and Witness Specialist gathers and prepares a variety of documents to provide victims of crimes with case related information, to include trial dates, victim rights, and the possibility of financial assistance.

Job Responsibilities

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Coordinates with the Attorney and interviews witnesses for information, explains the court process and ensures court availability. Communications with witnesses throughout the court process.

Prepares letters to victims informing them of the pending case, the prosecutor assigned to their case, and their rights as a victim; gathers and prepares a variety of case related documents and police reports.

Reviews and enters all information in completed victim paperwork into database; scans paperwork and submits to the case Attorney; electronically files the necessary documents with the Clerk of Court and registers victims

Makes travel and lodging arrangements for out of town victims and witnesses; prepares letters to employers to explain court appearances for victims and witnesses; provides assistance and support to victims and witnesses while testifying.

Serves as liaison to counseling agencies; refers sexual assault and domestic assault victims to community programs.

Assists in the recovery of funds expended by the Crime Victim Compensation Program; scans documents into computer system to alert Attorneys of restitution requests.

Participates on outside agency committees regarding victim services.

Demonstrates the ability to exemplify, by his/her actions, the County PRIDE philosophy.

Performs related duties as assigned.

Standards for Initial Consideration

Education, Training, and Experience Guidelines:
Associate's degree in Criminal Justice or related field; AND five (5) years of experience in a legal office which include some previous experience working with victims of crimes; OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Knowledge of:
Applicable local, State, and Federal laws, codes, regulations, and ordinances.

Court systems and legal procedures.

Customer service practices and etiquette.

Legal terminology.

Records maintenance and retention policies, and procedures.

General office procedures and equipment.

Records maintenance and retention policies and procedures.

Skill in:
Working independently with little or no direct supervision.

Maintaining accurate records, filing systems, and documentation.

Handling and maintaining confidential and sensitive information.

Organizing and prioritizing work to meet deadlines.

Operating a computer including standard software and some specialized software.

Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships.

Communicating effectively verbally and in writing.
