Job Title: Park Maintenance Technician

Under basic supervision of the Park Manager, the Parks Maintenance Technician performs routine and preventative maintenance on County parks to maintain a safe and enjoyable environment for Scott County citizens, visitors, and park patrons.

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Participates in all phases of construction and maintenance work on new and existing park facilities including framing, roofing, siding, finishing work; plumbing and electrical work, installation and repair of all park signage; concrete work to include framing, yardage estimation, pouring and finishing; light welding fabrication and repairs.
Performs ground maintenance work including, but not limited to: mowing, cutting brush, hauling gravel and garbage; grading, sanding and plowing roads; making repairs to roads or trails. Tree transplanting, laying drainage pipe, drainage tile and catch basins, and implementing drainage and erosions control systems
Performs routine forestry tasks such as pruning, thinning, planting and spraying trees, shrubs, bushes or grass.
Participates in specialized natural resource projects such as, but not limited to prescribed burns, timber stand improvements, wildlife habitat improvements, fishery habitat, reforestation, prairie rehabilitation, wetland restoration, enhancing nature trails and public access, implementing erosion control methods, hazardous material handling, and pesticide application
Installs new or renovates existing plumbing, water, and sewer lines; installs and maintains fixtures, cleans drains, solders leaks, replaces pipes, and other routine repairs; maintains complex well systems, pressure tanks, and pressure switches; maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs septic tanks, sewer mains, sewer lagoons, and other sewer facilities.
Operates heavy trucks and commercial mowing equipment to maintain grounds, perform garbage pick-up, plow snow, and haul materials.
Cleans park facilities to ensure safe and sanitary conditions for all park users.
Utilizes blueprints and building plans to assist in new construction; may design building or repair projects; determines necessary materials and submits to supervisor for approval.
Installs, inspects, and repairs recreational facilities and equipment to include playground equipment, complex electrical systems, computer and phone lines, campgrounds, picnic shelters, fishing and boating docks, and specialized maintenance aspects associated with swimming pools, beach house and paddle boat rentals, and waste treatment operations.
Directs and monitors the work of seasonal staff in performance of grounds maintenance or special repair and building projects.
Maintains and installs all security locking devices with in the park, including all padlocks, door handles, and deadbolts.
Maintains communication between department staff and outside contractors during construction projects; reports progress to Park Manager.
Demonstrates the ability to exemplify, by his/her actions, the County PRIDE philosophy.
Performs related duties as assigned.
Education, Training, and Experience Guidelines:
High School Diploma or GED; AND two (2) years of training in a vocational, trade school or an electrical, plumbing, or carpentry apprenticeship; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Knowledge of:
ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) designs and standards.
General maintenance and construction practices including basic working knowledge of plumbing, electrical and carpentry trades.
Tools, equipment, materials, and method used in parks maintenance.
Supervisory and project management principles and practices.
Gas and diesel engine automotive and heavy equipment operation and maintenance practices.
Applicable local, State, and Federal laws, codes, regulations, and ordinances.
Occupational hazards and work safety policies, procedures, and practices.
Skill in:
Operating heavy equipment and power tools safely and effectively.
Providing effective supervision and leadership to assigned staff.
Prioritizing and organizing tasks to meet deadlines.
Reading and interpreting maps and blueprints.
Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships.
Communicating effectively verbally and in writing.
License and Certification Requirements
Must possess a valid Iowa Class-A Commercial Driver's license, or obtain within six (6) months of hire along with air brake endorsement.
Must maintain a First Aid, CPR, and AED Certification.
Physical Demands and Working Environment
Work is performed outdoors at Scott County parks and required exposure to dangerous tools, equipment, and machinery, extreme weather conditions, electrical voltage, and hazardous chemicals. May be required to climb ladders, work in trenches, and lift objects weighing up to 70 pounds.
